I. A. Richards (1893-1979) is an important English theorist, literary critic and poet. His theory of analysis of meaning ever had a great influence on development of literary critic of the west. In the book Mencius on the Mind, Richards made a valuable trial in discussing around the book Mencius in order to promote the communication between the west and China. However, till this time, there still has little introduction about this book in our country. The dissertation makes a deep study of the theory of analysis of meaning and the main points of the book Mencius on the Mind, attempting to reveal why and how Richards put his mode into explanation of the book Mencius..At first, the dissertation gives a brief overview of how the book Mencius on the Mind is shaped concluding his experiences in China in 1929-1931. Then it carries out a discussion of the theory of analysis of meaning around the book Meaning of Meaning and points out that the mode of analysis of meaning is based on the sign-situations and multiple definition. Next, it explores the main points of the book Mencius on the Mind, attempting to reveal why and how Richards analyzed the characteristics of the language and the views of Mencius on the mind. Finally, a discussion is held about the contribution and the shortage of the techniques in the light of the hermeneutic and contemporary translation studies. I hope that this dissertation could provide a new perspective for the comprehension of Chinese literary.
