In the history of opera creation, it is not rare that different composers work on the same subject. But it is indeed uncommon that Puccini and Massenet—both distinguished composers at the same historical period and representing respectively French and Italian schools of opera—composed on the same piece of work and achieved great success. As a matter of fact, to make a research on their success as well as the styles they represent is of great significance: it not merely promotes the development of Chinese opera; it is also helpful to grasping different styles in both the vocal sound teaching and singing. Centering on this, this article makes exploration maily from the following four aspects: 1. To know the different creating backgrounds and their roles in opera history; 2. To understand the role the two operas play in both Puccini' s and Massenet' s creating career through the analysis of their personal background; 3. To make a research on the two operas' different musical theatricality as well as an analysis of the different orientation of heroines' character and treatment of the dramatic climax; 4. To grasp the general styles and singing styles of both French and Italian operas through the analysis of the form inheritance and singing requirement.
