Xiao Hong is a woman writer with the special characteristic in Chinese literature of the twentieth century. The wide popularity of Xiao Hong in these days is not a shallow or transitory frenzy about Xiao Hong, which has been proved by her special and skillful writing out of her short and tragic life, her intractable soul as well as her profound understanding of human nature. The popularity must be a further understanding of this precious life.Xiao Hong' s painful life experiences have attributed strong tragic consciousness to her writing. Her strong tragic consciousness is used to vivify the life of the common people who are suffering from the threat of death, who are struggling against the extreme difficulties. Moreover, it is used to visualize the tragic destiny of a nation which is bogged down in the crisis of brutal war. Accordingly, the tragic consciousness of Xiao Hong embodies her love and her anxiety for the sufferings of the human being. Being always anticipating for "love" and "warmth" , Xiao Hong doesn' t make the characters in her novels succumb to the human' s tragic life, but bravely fight back. Therefore, a kind of tragic spirit is added to her tragic consciousness.The comprehensive understanding of Xiao Hong' s tragic consciousness in Xiao Hong herself and her novels is presented in this paper. First, Xiao Hong' s life is divided into five periods: childhood lacking for love, disappointing love dream in youth, lonely days in Japan, life as a woman, and agonies in the time of war. In addition, Xiao Hong' s biography and studying materials about her are all used to review her life experiences. And then, upon the review of her life, the formation of Xiao Hong' s tragic consciousness and its underlying significance are given further study.
