Feng Youlan, an outstanding celebrity has great influence on the development of academic thought for quite a long time because his unique thought covers many a field, such as trend of thought both at home and abroad, including the ancient times and the present society. Moreover, his thought fuses the field of philosophy with history. Therefore, it indicates that there could be a multitude of ways to understand and illustrate his academic thoughts. Yet, there is one aspect, which requires our special attention, that is, Materialism.Materialism plays a very important role in his maturity of academic activities and attaches great importance to his academic thought system. During a certain period of time, the last years of his life, this even becomes a solid foundation for his academic research.Feng Yaolan experienced an eventful period in Chinese history. His life almost spanned a whole century. The turbulent historic period and social environment favored Feng Youlan with different understanding to Materialism and therefore, the application of Materialism had diverse varieties during different historic periods. Generally speaking, it can be divided into three development periods. They are partial combination, (the 30s and the 40s in Chinese history); stagnancy and change (50s and 60s); and retrospection respectively.Materialism spread and was very popular during the 30s and the 40s. With the influence of this trend of thought, Feng Youlan tried to mix the theory of Materialism with the academic research, attempting to analyze trend of thought from the perspective of economy and social background. Different from these theorists of Marxism, Feng Youlan mainly comprehended Materialism from the angles of academy rather than ideology because he did not believe in Materialism and did not regard it as the mere scientific truth.
