Study On The Mental Health Of Medical College Students In Shanxi Province

Aim:By comparison between the mental health level of regularly enrolled students and expansively enrolled ones, the paper attempts to find the main factors that affect the mental health level of these two groups, and suggest some effective methods for mental health education to solve the mental hygiene problems existed in different groups of university students.Method:362 medicine major freshmen from 14 classes in Shanxi Medical University are randomly sampled and tested on medical health with Symptom Checklist-90 (regularly enrolled students from 7 classes and expansively enrolled students from 7 classes). All data were counted up and analyzed by means SPSS 10.0 on computer.Result:1. Comparing with the Chinese undergraduate norms, the average scores of the medical students investigated were lower. They show significant difference (P<0.05). Comparing with Chinese norm crowds, the average scores of medical students were higher except somatizatioal factor ((p>0.05). There is significant difference (P<0.05).2. Regularly enrolled students obtain higher scores than expansively enrolled students in interpersonal relationship, horror, and psychopath. By T-test, the difference is significant (p<0.05).As for the hostility factor, the scores of regularly enrolled students are much higher than those of expansively enrolled students. They show significant difference (P<0.05).3. Non-single children group has higher scores in total score, total symptom index and obsessional factor. By T-test, the difference is significant (P<0.05).4. In the scores of interpersonal relationship aspect, different groups whose mothers have different educational level show remarkable difference.5. By stepwise regression analyses, students'fathers , who are engaged in service and one parent of students', who work at other occupations have positive effect on students'scores in SCL-90; Students, who majored in forensic medicine, stomatology, iconography and who are non-single children ,and who are regularly enrolled ones have negative effect on students'scores in SCL-90.Conclusion:1. Attention should be paid to freshmen by corresponding departments for they have many problems in medical health.2. Regularly enrolled students share more problems in interpersonal relationship, horror, and psychopath than expansively enrolled students.3. Mental hygiene problems of non- single children should not be ignored.4. Different educational level of mothers affects the mental health of university students.5. Parents'occupation, different major, non-single child, and regular enrollment are the main factors which affect the freshmen in Shanxi Medical University in this research.
