Objective To grasp the present situation of mental health in medical college students and related risk factors through an epidemiology survey so as to provide some basis for coping strategies to promote their mental health.Methods2000students covering two grades and six majors in Pingliang Medical College were selected by using cluster sampling method and a survey on their mental health status was conducted by using "SCL-90Symptom Checklist" and a self-designed questionnaire. A database was established by use of EpiData3.0software, Data analysis including descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing and multiple regression analysis was carried out with SPSS19.0for data analysis.Results1. of the2000sending questionnaires, totally1,919valid questionnaires were retrieved with the effective rate of93.1%.2. By compared with the norm of domestic college students, the average scores were higher than the norm values with a significant difference. The number of people with scores more than160was1216, and accounted for63.37%of the total respondents; the number of respondents with positive items more than43was1539, and taken up80.20%.3. The number of respondents with the general symptomatic index between2.5and3.5accounted for13.88%and the severity of self-conscious symptom was between mild to moderate. None of respondents scored Between3.5and4.5,4.5and5.4. There were five symptom factors which showed more obviously and affected more people such as obsessive-compulsive symptoms, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, hostility and depression in a sample population. 5. The results of using multiple regression analysis on the relationship between the general symptomatic index and origin of students, gender and nationality showed that there was a certain relationship between the mental health status of medical college students and some factors including only child or not, family relationships and related analysis.ConclusionsIn general, the overall students’mental health status in Pingliang Medical College is fine, without any serious psychological problems. Among all the subjects under investigation, obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, hostility and depression are the most obvious symptoms. In addition to the traits of the physical and mental development in young teenagers as a main factor, other effluence factors of mental health include teaching management, academic pressure and so on. In order to solve these problems, this paper puts forward five measures:strengthening quality education, correcting students’ world view, philosophy and their view of values, and, developing the good character or personality for students, learning to control their emotions, actively joining social activities, as well as strengthening the psychological education, constructing a healthy campus culture.
