ENCHIHUMIKO was born into a well-educated family in 1905 and died in 1986. Her father is a famous linguistic teaching in the Tokyo University. She has received the best education since childhood, which makes her a woman with good literal tastes rarely in her age. Thus it turns out to be quite natural that she entered the field of literature, and because of which, her life becomes rich and colorful. When she was a little girl, she began to read dramas and classic literal works under the guidance of her parents, and her favorite was The Tale of Genji. Therefore ENCHIHUMIKO starts with writing classic drama, and then turns to novels, the style of which is she was also greatly influenced by her intimate writer friends such as HIRABAYASHITAIKO, HAYASHIHUMIKO,etc. The novel The Road of a Woman was accomplished after a series of important events happening in ENCHIHUMIKO's life like war, fatal disease suffering from poverty. It is her masterpiece and gains great popularity for her, after she has returned to the literary circles. It is also because of this novel that she was honored with Noma literature awards in 1958. The novel relates to a whole life of a traditional Japanese woman, through which the writer discloses in this novel the miserable marital relationship and the misfortune of women in feudalism. In this thesis, I will focus on this motif and follow the traces of different fates of various women characters in the novel to discuss ENCHIHUMIKO's view on Japanese women and the lives pictured in The Road of a Woman. Besides this thesis will also investigate the writing methods from the perspective of the organization as well as a deep insight into her fusion of classic Japanese literature and Buddhism allusions.
