Poetry, occupying an important position in Chinese literature history, has always been the threshold of important literary revolutions. Researches on poetry of particular period not only show its literary development, but also somewhat mirror the social status of that period. Modern poetry of Cultural Revolution as the research objective, this thesis systematically investigates into the intermingle of both published and unpublished underground poetical works, attempting to present a broad overview of the poetry during Cultural Revolution and to change the classification of former studies. This paper consists of four chapters. Chapter One defines two distinctive poems of Cultural Revolution, monotonous but sonorous mass voice and diverse and unique individual intonement which constituted the numerous and complicated poetry world of that special age. Chapter Two deals with the collective -unconsciousness-affected mass poetry, exaggerated but straight, impulsive and irrational. But poetry is an extremely individualized literature genre, the blind following suit of the masses and the similarity of the works indicate the failure of the popularization trial in poetry. Chapter Three presents the ego-conscious individual writings which are mainly divided into four types: the sonorous and bright mainstream works (Zhang Yongmei and Li Ying), the murmurous monologues (Mu Dan and Tang Shi), the embarrassed works of self-contradictory between faith and personal ideas (Guo Xiaochuan and Shi Zhi) as well as the " high volume" and rebellious works( Hang Xiang and "Bai Yang Dian poem cluster"). Chapter Four presents a new comprehension of the poetry of Cultural Revolution: the complicated state in the form of blend and penetration and value of the poetry in the Cultural Revolution highlight the gloriousness of poetry of that time.
