Li Shimin's military career began with his father's military uprising in Jing Yang, Shanxi province where his father was a military officer in the Sui danasty. Li Shimin's military contributions -he commanded four campaigns including the attacking of Chang An— had laid the foundations of the unification of Tang dynasty. After ascending the throne of Emperor of Tang dynasty, Li Shimin conquered the minorities on the border areas and was honoured "Da Ke Han". Rich military experiences trained and sharpened Li Shimin's military caliber, winning him a title of "military scientist". This dissertation focuses on Li Shimin's military skills, his psychological quality and military thoughts and my arguments are based on the old and new Tang Book and other historical documents as well as relevant papers and books by scholars at home and abroad. The whole paper consists of four parts.The first part discusses Li Shimin's military skills mainly from three aspects: his shooting skill, horsemanship and swordsmanship.The second part discusses Li Shimin's psychological quality. Li Shimin possesses nearly all the qualities that leadership requires: braveness, tenacity, calmness, decisiveness and broad-mindedness.The third part dwells on Li Shimin's military thoughts: his idea...
