"vp + Np <sub> 1 </ Sub> + + Np <sub> 2 </ Sub>" Structural Ambiguity

Ambiguity always is a hot issue which the linguists concern about. We can say that domestic research on the "VP+NP₁+DE (的) +NP₂" structural ambiguity is the beginning from Mr. Zhu Dexi. Hereafter, a lot of scholars have involved in the research on the ambiguity phenomenon in this type. But their reports can not thoroughly promulgate the nature of this structural ambiguity. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive research on this question. A thorough research on this question, not only will play a vital role for the contemporary Chinese research containing syntax, but also will be able to have a very tremendous influence on language teaching, artificial intelligence, machine translation, and so on. It will impel the language science and technology to develop more quickly, and enhance the speed and the precision of the natural language processing.This paper mainly consists of five chapters. The first one generally shows the significance of this study. Based on the existing study, the writer proposes his own study idea. In the second chapter, the writer firstly has carried on a generalization to the" VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structure and pointed out this structure contains the structure of modifier-noun, the structure of narrative-object and the ambiguity structure which will be not only analyzed as a modifier-noun structure, but also as a narrative-object structure. After that, in the light of distinct causes, this article classifies the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structural ambiguity into two types: the ambiguity caused by only different structural relations, the ambiguity caused by both different structural relations and level. Based on the language materials collected, the third chapter analyses the understanding restriction conditions of "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" ambiguity structure from the NP₂'s life and the VP's mobility. The author comes to the following conclusions: the NP₂'s life rank with the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structural ambiguity in understanding becomes the correlation dependence, the monosyllable verb which expresses the hands' and the foot's movement, easily combining with the tense auxiliary, enter the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structure to form the latent ambiguity structure; the double syllable verb which has the causes feature is easy to enter the"VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structure to form latent ambiguity structure; the double syllable "noun-verb", with the influence of the behind noun NP₁, both can be understood as the valency combination, and the non-valency combination, thus causes the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂"structure to appear ambiguity. In the fourth chapter, the author tries to find the methods to resolute the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂"structural ambiguity from four aspects: stylistics, rhythm structure, cognition and context. The author argued that, the tendency in the novel style, in which the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structure appears as an ambiguity structure, is higher than that in the editorial style; the rhythm structure analysis can well disambiguate the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structural ambiguity, it is one kind of methods which can effectively disambiguate the structural ambiguity; the cognition factor can instruct us according to the certain rule in understanding the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structure and in how to avoid the ambiguity; the contexts ,with the function of explanation and filter, can provide strong message on syntax, semantics and so on, for how to disambiguate the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structural ambiguity, and it is a good method to avoid ambiguity. In the last chapter, the author sums up the main research conclusion of the front four chapters and gives a plan to the future study.This article applies the level analysis, the semantic feature analysis, the style contrasting analysis, the rhythm structure analysis and many other methods to try to discover the conditions which make the "VP+NP₁+DE+NP₂" structure as an ambiguity structure, and to find the way to avoid ambiguity.
