By researching their changes during Wei-Jin and Southern Dynasty, we can see the political characteristics and the evolution of the military system in every Dynasty.This thesis makes a comprehensive analysis of the topic in six sections. The first section introduces the academic researches concerning the question and the significance of the study. Chapter 1 demonstrates the time in which the four zhong-lang generals are established. Chapter 2 analyzes the powers and status of the four zhong-lang generals during the long history, and indicates that the status of them was very important and special in the Southern Dynasty. Chapter 3 interprets the reason why the position of the four zhong-lang generals was only awarded to the imperial family in the Southern Dynasty. Chapter 4 explores the question concerning organizations and subordinates of the four zhong-lang generals.
