| Shi Ben Yi (1059)written by Ou-Yang Hsiu (1007-1072) is a classic work of the study on The Book of Songs, which ended the monopoly status of the long-established study molds on The Book of Songs in Han and Tang dynasties and raised the Skepticism on Ancient Theories. This thesis intends to research and classify the hermeneutic thoughts and the innovations in Shi Ben Yi based on the previous studies by the modern hermeneutic theory and methods, especially the western dissertations on the validity of interpretation. The thesis will show how the theory-Ben Mo Lun (the interpretation only by text) and the Ren Qing Lun (the empathy between of the ancient and the contemporary) by Ou-Yang Hsiu contribute to the improvement of the interpretation validity as well as describe the original contributions that Shi Ben Yi has made in the history of The Book Of Songs studies .Besides the introduction and conclusion, this thesis is divided into four parts.The introduction firstly introduces related Chinese Hermeneutic viewpoints and the study status in Ou-Yang Hsiu's poetry, then states the task of this thesis i.e. trying to find out the innovations of the hermeneutic thoughts in Ou-Yang Hsiu's Shi Ben Yi by employing approaches for examining the validity of text interpretation used in both Eastern and Western Hermeneutic studies.The first part introduces the background of and the innovative contents in Shi Ben Yi. The innovations mainly include "Ben Mo Lun " and "Ren Qing Lun" ,while its background is introduced in political, cultural and scholarly aspects. These serve as the pre-understanding to Ou-yang's study on The Book of Songs.The second part of this thesis mainly discusses Ou-Yang Hsiu's "Ben Mo Lun". Firstly, the chapter explains the originality and significance of "Ben Mo Lun", ie. it gives a clear delimitation that the interpretation on The Book of Songs should be focus on the text itself rather than historical or ideological elements etc., and it is in this way that can we get a more valid understanding on the text; Secondly, taking the original text of The Book of Songs as an parameter, the chapter points out the "devious interpretation" in the over-interpretation in Mao Chang and Zheng Xuan's version; Thirdly, the chapter illustrates that Ou-Yang Hsiu's "theory of interpratation directly from the text" regarded as the earliest hermeneutic method to interpret The Book of Songs had derived from Mencius' poetry opinion that "we should read from thecontext" as well as from the thoughts of Guan Wen Er Shuo popular in Tang dynasty.The third part of the thesis discusses Ou-yang's "Ren Qing Lun". It gives three aspects of this theory. First, the theory, regarding every poet as a common people and supposing that there is reliable empathy between people living in different times, originally employed a psychological way to interpret poems; Second, by using this psychological interpretation, Ou-yang analyzed , criticized the divination combined with mystical Confucianist belief in interpretations by Mao Chang and Zheng Xuan and set up his own theory of "YinshiShuo", which pointed out and explained the love songs in The Book of Songs as well as talked about motives of the poets; Last , the chapter claims that "RenQingLun "by Ou-Yang Hsiu had a profound relationship with the Yi-yi-ni-zhi in Mencius' poetry system.The fourth part of the thesis uses the poem Jing Nu to demonstrate how Ou-yang has analyzed and evaluated the over -interpretation in Mao Chang and Zheng Xuan's version.The conclusion sums up that Ou-Yang Hsiu's Study on The Book of Songs, although has definitely its limitations, has been significant and influential in the field of Chinese literature study mainly due to his original and thorough theories of "Ben Mo Lun " and "Ren Qing Lun". |
