In today's global film industry, Lee is the only Chinese director who made in the recognition of both the mainstream Western audience and China's domestic audience. His films are often subject to those mainstream Western or traditional themes, he has such a rare perspective of Chinese culture and handled it in a much easier manner for the world wide acceptance. Take Ang Lee's success as a special case, it is of significant importance to study the cultural characteristics and the pros and cons in his films, and to provide useful insights for Chinese films to enter the global industry. Therefore, the study on Ang Lee's films is not just a film research, but also a cultural research, in other words, it is the research on how the two different cultures are intertwined in his films. In this paper, the author sets off to do a case study on Ang Lee's films with artistic methods from a practical point of the creation of them. And the key point lies on the three of his most influential films which yet have not been thoroughly studied -- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Hulk and Brokeback Mountain, while his other films are also to come along the way of this research. Through this the author takes a deep view on Ang Lee's features, methods and skills of film making, as well as their inspirations for the Chinese film industry in both artistic and technical fields.
