| Ji Kang, who made great achievements in the fields of literature, philosophy, aesthetics, etc, is an important writer and artist in the mid-ancient times in history. In terms of his literary achievements, he is usually well known for his treatises and poetry. Actually, he also made great influence to the works of literature and art and the spirit of scholars by the Biography of Sages and Hermits which is the first biography named "sages" in the Three Kingdoms period. It has distinct artistic characteristics and reflects the spirit of that time when all kinds of biographies increase rapidly. It has great value in terms of the research of Ji Kang's thought, the biographies of Wei and Jin period, the hermit tendency and the sprit of scholars at that time. This paper takes the Biography of Sages and Hermits by Ji Kang as its object of study. It discusses in detail the reason of writing the biography, the content, the artistic characteristics and influence of the biography. It attempts to reveal the general features and the significance of the epoch-making biography so as to facilitate readers' appreciation of Ji Kang's thought and spirits and the specific spirits of Wei and Jin dynasties.Besides the induction and conclusion, the paper is divides into three parts.The first part is the reason of writing the Biography of Sages and Hermits. In this paper, it was discussed from the two viewpoints that are the social circumstance and the inherent reasons. Firstly, in terms of the social circumstance and background, the prevail of the metaphysical and reclusive ethos, the trend of the more detailed classification of characters, the more obvious manifestation of the aesthetic standards and the increasing of various biographies contributed a lot to the creation of the Biography of Sages and Hermits. Secondly, from the viewpoint of Ji Kang's experience and personality, the writer of this paper analyzes the inherent reasons of its composing. It may be said that Ji Kang is writing his own mind so as to express his desire to pursuit his ideal.The second part is the content and art characteristics of the Biography of Sages and Hermits by Ji Kang. This part is mainly about stylistics of the work and it is the essential component of the paper. This part is mainly discussed in the following four parts: firstly, it gives us a general idea of the development of hermit culture and concept of hermit so the work can be pitched clearly in the history of hermit culture. Secondly, it talks about the meaning of the title, times in which the work was written, summary of the story, characters and compilation of the entry in the story. Thirdly, it discusses values of the time in depth reflected in the story. The Biography of Sages and Hermits by Ji Kang reflects people's spiritual pursuit and fashion during Wei and Jin Time. Fourthly, it analyzes the art characteristics of the work by concrete examples briefly. The work is featured by concise portraits of characters, thoughtful and logical characteristics of language and so on.The third part analyses the influence of the Biography of Sages and Hermits by Ji Kang. Inheriting the past and giving enlightenment to the following generation, the Biography of Sages and Hermits plays an important role in the history of literature. This part will be discussed in the following three perspectives: Firstly, it discusses the biography's influence to the image and personality of Ji Kang. Following the spirits of the sages and hermits he depicts, Ji Kang established the specific personality of his own. Secondly, it discusses its influence to works of literature and art. The Biography of Sages and Hermits by Ji Kang launches scholars' enthusiasm of writing biographies. The kind of images he established for the sages and hermits also become the important theme in the fields of poetry and painting. Fourthly, it discusses its influence to the ideal and spirit of scholars. It provides scholar with a spiritual relaxing paradise, where the scholars express their admiration for the sages and hermits.By writing sages, Ji Kang becomes a sage himself. The Biography of Sages and Hermits and Ji Kang' noble integrity which influences many generations of scholars' mind, leads us into infinite contemplation and cherishing a memory of the past. |
