Meanwhile Shen's theory of "Qu Shen", "Yue Xing" and "Rule of Brush Writings" were discussed and analyzed. The author's opinion is that the innovation of modern portrait should follow the rule of "return to the ancients is one kind of renovation". Portrait painters should return to the traditional excellent way which were proposed by painters of meddle Tang dynasty.Shen's Xing-Shen Theory inherited and developed the theory of Chinese portrait painting and "Being Similar in Shape" was heightened to an especially high level. Besides particularly expatiating on observing and representing measures in portrait painting, the theory also claimed that portrait painting should find foothold on the studying on excellent techniques of the ancients. It has important re-understanding values to the modern Chinese portrait painting.Shen in portrait painting always belongs to the category of philosophy, but Xin (Form or Shap) mostly involved with its essence characteristic in plastic arts. Humankind has its own sociality relative to mountain, river, lake, flower, bird and so on; so Xin must be greatly emphasized in portrait paintings and intensive studying and developing of humanism are the fundamental reasons for the living of portrait painting. In portrait paintings, if the shape similarity between the object and its portrait were absent, the similarity in spirit between the object and its portrait would be never exist. That portraits look alike in spirit with the objects lies on the object's inbeing characters were depicted in the painting or not. It is not true that Chinese totally refuse to accept the western realism. The western realism should be brought into the Chinese art enjoying system. It is impossible to represent all characteristics of personnel in portrait painting by using assuming brush writings and calligraphy writings. By contrasting with western realism, Chinese painting has its own traits, i.e. shape similarity between the object and its portrait getting from the combination of lines and sides. How to use ancient and western art works for Chinese portrait painting references?
