This present discussion mainly unclosed the discussion about the importance of the traditional theory ----Yi Xing Xie Shen .The author′s opinion is that the innovation of modern portrait should follow the rule of the traditional Chinese painting .The paper want to disclose the reasons of portrait painting′s decline after Song & Yuan dynasty based on the research and study of the portrait painting of He Jiaying .He′s Chinese portrait painting inherited and developed the theory of Chinese painting and Yi Xing Xie Shen was hightened to an especially high level .He insists on the rule of traditional Chinese painting , meanwhile he studies western realism and Japanese painting .Which made his portrait painting become classic and sage .By this way ,he offered us a good example to learn and to develop the Chinese painting .Obviously ,it always has important values to the modern Chinese portrait painting .In portrait painting , the shape similarity is the base of the spirit similarity .No shape similarity ,no spirit similarity . By contrasting with western realism Chinese painting has it′s own traits .Nothing can in place of its vital status .On the other hand ,that portraits look alike in spirit with the objects lies on the object′s inbeing characters were depicted in the painting or not .It is not the rule that Chinese painting totally refuse to absorb the western realism .To accept the western realism properly is sage and beneficial .How to use ancient and western art works for the modern Chinese painting reference ? He′s painting practice provides us a good reference.
