Expressionism was one of the most remarkable achievements of modern art, which deeply affected the cultural landscape of the 20th century. Expressionism is defined as a sort of art style initiated by a group of German artists who named themselves the Blue Ride in the early 20th century to express their own emotion boldly and frankly, featured with exaggerative anamorphic images. In 1980s this sort of art style reemerged and was called neo-expressionism. Why it was called neo-expressionism? In this thesis the answer to this question will ushers in the exploration of the difference and affiliation between the expressionism and the neo-expressionism.There are three themes in this thesis. The first theme is about the common things shared by the expressionism and the neo-expressionism. The second theme is to see the essential difference between the expressionism and the neo-expressionism in term of age backgrounds, art idea and art expression. The third theme is about the origins of the expressionism and the neo-expressionism.In this thesis, I emphasize the difference and innovation of expression technique between the expressionism and the neo-expressionism, drawing the conclusion that: with the same leitmotivs to express the artists themselves as the expressionism, the neo-expressionism reveal its return to the expressionism in the aspects of picture plane, technique of drawing and sentiment, meanwhile the different age grounds against they emerged respectively led to the differences in the art idea, exploration and innovation of express technique. But the innovation of neo-expressionism was based on its inheritance of the expressionism, revealing its complex relevance to the expressionism.
