The Hani nationality is an ancient national minority which inhabits southwest China and some countries that are contiguous to Yunnan Province. They have been creating and developing their dress patterns which are distinct from other nationalities by wisdom in the long term of produce practice and living practice. The Hani nationality doesn't form the unified dress but various dress styles and ornament features according to the different living condition of each branch, so its aesthetic value and cultural value are very peculiar, the study of them is significant and valuable. It is such common but mysterious lines and symbols that make the dress patterns and the culture contact together and have more connotation, and make the study of these more significant in terms of such a nationality which has their own language but hasn't character. The heart of this article is artistic study; it mainly studies three aspects of dress patterns of the Hani nationality. Firstly, analyses the superficial artistic effect and special expression of art of dress patterns preliminarily byclassifying the dress patterns according to different materials-----geometricalpatterns, flowering straw patterns, birds and beasts patterns, folkways patterns and lucky patterns. This article also does some study of the process of dress patterns of the Hani nationality from the angle of dress design. Secondly, speculates the artistic characteristic of the dress patterns on the basis of ornament, abstraction, identification and aesthetics abstractly, strives to extract, summarize and sum up the dress patterns of the Hani nationality. Thirdly, sums up cultural connotation of the dress patterns of the Hani nationality, especially the branch patterns characteristics. This article embodies the rich cultural connotation contained in the Hani nationality dress patterns by narrating the women dress patterns of Biyue branch, dress patterns of Aini branch-----'Abo', headwear of the Hani people who attend a burial ceremonyin Honghe area------'Wuba', triangle lines which stands for the culture ofterrace and trapezoid lines. The whole article discuss dress patterns of the Hani nationality systematically and from simple to profound, from point to plane, from the surface to the centre. In the end, the article discusses the carrying forward and application of dress patterns of the Hani nationality in modern design. It is expected that this study can extract some elements of art with national characteristics, provide more materials to modern design and do some speculation in grasping the deeply connotation of our traditional culture and advocating the original of design.
