Historical Period In Wenzhou City, The Formation And Development

The historical period witnessed ups and downs in urban Wenzhou. During remote antiquity , Wenzhou had been an underdeveloped place with a wide area and a sparse population for long time . The initial city of Wenzhou emerged in the Western Han Dynasty when the capital of the Dong-Ou Kingdom was founded there , and it was from this time on that Wenzhou was recorded by Chinese official history. In the Eastern Jin Dynasty , the seat of Yongjia Prefecture was located on the south bank of the Oujiang River , which became the original base of the present city. Promoted by the change of the political geographical position and population immigration , Wenzhou grew up as a famous harbor city with prosperous commerce and large population , and reached its apex of development during the whole period of the feudal society . Unfortunately, the urban development had fallen in a fluctuated station in the left time owing to the political change , extraneous invasion and changeable policy.According to the temporal sequence, the process of the urban evolution in historical period can be divided into four stages , the initial city stage , the city-foundation stage , the transitional and rapid development stage, and the fluctuated stage . Based on the above clue , the thesis discusses the process of economic , cultural evolution and urban construction at different historical stages . The author tries to find the relationship between geographical background and urban chang , the law behind the transition of urban function and its spatial pattern . Quarter-fold suggestions for the future sustainable development of Wenzhou metropolitan area have been put forward in the view of historical geography .
