Study On The Relationship Of Narcissistic Personality Traits , Parenting Style And Life Events Of College Students

Narcissism has been studied from the aspect of personality disorder. Many scholars subsequently find that normal persons are also quite narcissistic. Therefore, narcissism is considered as a kind of personality traits. Narcissism can also be divided into overt narcissism and covert narcissism based on many domestic and foreign researches. Overt narcissism is relatively healthy and covert narcissism is relatively unhealthy. Overt narcissism is more positive, optimistic, while covert narcissism is relatively low self-esteem, negative. Either overt narcissism or covert narcissism refers to people like exaggeration and desire to be concerned and praised. This paper studies the impact of parenting style on narcissistic personality traits, as well as the regulation role of life events between parenting styles and narcissism. In this study,"Parenting Style Questionnaire Scale", "College Students Narcissistic Personality Questionnaire Scale" and the revised version of "Life Event Questionnaire Scale" are used as a research tool to investigate the relationship between parenting style, life events and narcissism. The main research conclusions are as follows:(1) Demographic variables: Gender in these dimensions of narcissistic self-admiration,susceptible quality and implicit self-admiration has significant differences. School students have a deep difference in a number of narcissism dimensions such as: the desire for power,superiority, a sense of privilege, self-admiration, recessive self-envy and narcissistic total scores. The differences of Grades on each dimension of narcissism are significant. The differences of origin of students on each dimension of narcissism are significant. The differences of student achievement on the individual level of overt narcissism were significant.Gender differences significantly in parenting styles, the boys are significantly higher than girls on parental warmth factor , the girls are higher than boys in the factors of parents severe punishment, refuse to deny , mother's too mush interference , severe punishment and favoritism . The differences are significant in parenting styles for one -child , and one-child are significantly higher than non-child in parental warmth , while non-child are significantly higher than one-child in the factors of parents severe punishment , parents refuse to dene,parents' favoritism.(2) There is a significant correlation be among narcissism, parenting styles and life events, among them, the dominant narcissism is significant positive correlation with parents severe punishment,too mush interference and favoritism,meanwhile is significant positive correlation with mother's excessive interference , protection , refuse to deny and favoritism.Covert narcissism is significant negative correlation with parental warmth and understanding,is significant positive correlation with father's sever punishment,excessive interference,denial , overprotection ,and mother's excessive interference, overprotection, rejection deny and favoritism.Overt narcissism is significant positive correlation with the factors of love, love fails, the couple feeling bad, housing shortage, family financial difficulties, be misunderstood wronged,theft, publicly humiliated, discriminated by cold, job promotion, outstanding personal achievements. On the contrary, Covert narcissism is significant positive correlation with the factors of love,love fails, the couple feeling bad,lovers places,sexual dissatisfaction,tense relations with teachers and classmates, be misunderstood wronged, theft, property damage,publicly humiliated, discriminated by cold, for now professional dissatisfaction, job promotion, outstanding personal achievements.(3) In the parenting style,mother's severe punishment and emotional warmth has a significant positive prediction effect on Overt Narcissism. Mother's severely punishment,excessive interference also has a significant positive prediction effect on Covert Narcissism.Mother's emotional warmth has a significant negative prediction effect on Covert Narcissism.(4) Life events play a regulative role in the relationship between parenting style and narcissism. Among those, the mother emotional warmth and examination unsatisfactory interaction term, the mother favoritism and stolen property damage interactive term, excessive interference with the mother and outstanding personal achievement interaction item have a significant predictive effect on overt narcissism. Father emotional warmth and housing shortage, the father refusal to deny and the housing shortage, Mother emotional warmth and public humiliation interaction term, Mother severe punishment and public humiliation interaction term, Father overprotection and outstanding personal achievements interaction term, Mother emotional warmth and outstanding personal achievements interaction term,Mother severe punishment and outstanding personal achievements interaction term have significant positive prediction effect on Covert Narcissism.
