Films are one of the most influent media nowadays; one film can't be so popular without the excellent use of languages. Through systematic functional grammar this thesis aims at the analysis of the dialogues in film Forrest Gump which won six Academy Award Nominations. The thesis investigates the features of oral discourses and the linguistic phenomena in that film are compared and contrasted with three Metafunction-Ideational Function, Interpersonal Function, Textual Function. The analysis makes it clear that the dialogues have a larger percent of Mental process and Verbal process and the usage of subjective modal verbs also realizes the meaning of expressions. Furthermore, the dialogues have dominant textual themes and the theme-rheme patterns are mostly theme-paralleling. At present a lot of written genres are analyzed through SFG, while there is a blank in the detailed analysis of spoken languages. The purpose of this thesis is to sum up the unique features of oral materials, and to prove the feasibility and the important role of SFG in the analysis of both genres. In a word, this thesis proves the appliance of SFG to actual materials is highly effective and scientific.
