Catford came up with the theory of untranslatability in his book A Linguistic Theory of Translation. Untranslatability doesn’t mean that language can’t be interpreted. It means the disability to completely transform one language to another. It is hard to remain the absolute equivalence. Catford divided causes of untranslatability into cultural and linguistic differences. Catford also came up with solutions to untranslatability and helped interpreters to improve.Forrest Gump was an adorable piece of cinema. The movie dialogues were clear and easily understood. American history and local customs were included. So it is important to interpret correctly for Chinese audiences. The writer takes the movie Forrest Gump as the material in simultaneous interpretation, with the theory of untranslatability to direct the interpretation. After interpretation, the writer analyzes the process of interpretation and improve it with sublimation theory, conversion and compensation methods. So that the writer can go well for future work.
