On The Rewriting Strategy Of Moive Subtitle Translation Illustrated By Movie Forrest Gump

In the recent years, lots of classical foreign movies, which have been imported by the rapid development of intercultural communication, have become one of the most important media to taste the exotic cultural flavor, and enjoying movie has been one of the indespensable leisure ways in our daily life.Due to the foreign movie rush, the traditional time-consuming film-dubbing could not adapt the modern demands of audience. More people prefer the combination between the original works and target subtiles, in which we can conveniently understand the context. Thus, more people have been focusing on the subtitling translating, and it makes the subtitling translation become the hot research field. Subtitling translation, belonging to one branch of literary translation, also has the common charateristics, that is, converting between two languages. At the meantime, the movie created by the director, which is a kind of artistic form, is always deeply affected by the directors’life experience and social environment and reflecting some certain social and cultural backgrounds, so the dialogue in the movie contains much more cultural information. When translating the subtitles of movie, the translator should not be constrained to the level of language convertion, but comprehend its characteristics and adopt some strategies to effectively convey its core content through target language translation.This essay, based on a detailed analysis on the subtitling translation of the film Forrest Gump, analyzes the application of strategies of rewriting. This essay is divided into three parts:in the first part there is a thorough introducion of the research’s background, range and purpose. In the second part, to better implant the information from the source language to the target lanaguage, the author tries to illustrate theoretically the application of satategies in the translation practise,that is, standardization and purification reduction and omission, downplay of the humor and the treatment of culture in the process of translation. The last part is the summary of the essay, which hopes this essay might offer some theoretical and practical guidance to the practice of subtitling translation.
