The language users have been driving for the precision of language for a long time. The vagueness of language has been considered as the violation of the conversation principle. But in daily language, vague language has been everywhere. Actually, vagueness is an attribute of vague language which could enrich the daily language. Until now, the research on the vague language has been developed into many fields.As a kind of medium, new reporting has played an increasingly important role in our information age. Accuracy is the primary requirement of the language of news reporting, so why vague language could be allowed to exist in the language of news reporting? On the basis of picking up the authoritative material of English news, this paper has made some pragmatic research and analysis on the vague language in news report.This paper has summed up the theoretical base of vague language and some features of English news reporting. Combined with those features, this paper uses the Relevance Theory of Sperber and Wlison first of all, in which vague number and title of the news reporting have been put more attention. Then, this paper has used the Adaptation Theory of Verchueren to analyze the adaptation of vague language to psychological, social and physical world. At last, on the basis of ten pragmatic functions of the vague language, combined with the features and theories of the English news reporting, this paper has summed up ten pragmatic functions of the vague language in English news reporting. This paper has combined the phenomenon of vague language with the English news report to enrich the material of vague language and improve the theory of news reporting.
