E-C Translation Of Vague Language In English Business News From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

In modern society,an increasing number of people have become interested in economy both at home and abroad through reading news.Vagueness,which is an intrinsic nature of language and has its rationality in its existence,exists universally in all kinds of literary forms and plays various pragmatic functions.Therefore,E-C translation of vague language in English business news is of great importance and is worthy of discussion.This thesis proposes to study E-C translation of vague language in English business news from the perspective of Verschueren's Adaptation Theory.According to Verschueren,the use of language is a process of continuous making choices either consciously or unconsciously.As a kind of extremely complicated inter-cultural communication,translation is also subject to continuous making choices and adaptation.Adaptation Theory requires that translators should make choices at both linguistic level and at extra-linguistic level to make target text adaptable to linguistic conventions of target language,which includes lexical and syntactical conventions,and physical world,mental world and social world of target readers.The thesis first reviews both overseas and domestic studies on vague language,and then introduces the theoretical framework of E-C translation of vague language.Next,this thesis analyzes the pragmatic functions of vague language extracted from authoritative English newspapers and websites such as Financial Times and New York Times.Then,on the basis of the framework of Adaptation Theory,it elaborates on E-C translation of vague language by adapting to linguistic conventions,which includes lexical and syntactical conventions,and physical world,mental world and social world.Furthermore,some translation strategies are given,namely,vagueness into vagueness,vagueness into precision,vague into blank and precision into vagueness,with the aim of making the target text more accurate and natural.
