With reference to 80 years'development of animated cartoon in China, by highlighting the representative works from late 1950s to mid 1960s, from late 1970s to mid 1980s—two golden ages for animated cartoon in the country, the paper attempts to give an in-depth analysis of the artistic features of Chinese animated cartoon from the visual and audio perspectives. It also attempts to explore into its potential for development by analyzing the limitations of various genres, numerous first-hand information about cartoon production, and the latest techniques in the animated cartoon industry. Moreover, with a view to the indisputable fact that our domestic cartoon market is faced with severe foreign competition, the paper offers suggestions on how to adapt our way of thinking to meet the demand of modern society, and how to help Chinese cartoon keep its traditional traits and at the same time display popular features in harmony with the trend of globalization. Probing into the issue from three aspects—language in movies, innovation in production theories, development of modern technology—the paper stresses the equal importance of reform and tradition. It emphasizes the upholding of the traditional Chinese culture and the assimilation of other cultures, with an aim to enrich the artistic trove of Chinese animated cartoon and lay a solid foundation for the development of this industry in China.
