A Comparative Study Of Certain Object Quantity Expression Between Modern Chinese And English

The expression of the quantity concept is a common topic that almost all languages need to involve, but different languages may have different expression methods and structures. Many studies about Chinese and English quantity expressions have been done, yet most of them are about the comparative study between Chinese liang ci and English unit nouns, and the mutual translation as well.While this thesis selects the object quantity expression of modern Chinese and English as the research objects, from the angle of contrastive linguistics, adopt a great deal of examples, make use of the method of comparative study and detailed description, analyzes to compare the classification and characteristics of object quantity expressions between modern Chinese and English, among them the comparative study of certain object quantity expression is a main point of the thesis. Based on this point, the thesis analyses the similarities and differences of two languages from two angles, and tries to explain the reasons that lead to them, thus drawing some conclusions:1. There is no concept in English which is completely equal to the Chinese"liang ci",so use "English quantifier"(英语量词) to express the English quantity expressing methods is not scientific.2. The expression of object quantity of Chinese language is single-leveled expression, but the expression of English language is dual-leveled expression.3. The conciseness of Chinese quantity expression structure pays the price of existence of a large number of liang ci. While the fact that nonexistence of a specific part of speech of quantifier in English pays the price of complication of quantity expression methods.Hope this thesis can provide a new way of thinking for the comparative study between Chinese and English languages, and can provide some references and help to the second language teaching and learning.This thesis consists of the following six parts:...
