On the issue of Zuo Zongtang recovered Sinkiang by force, there were manyresearch results in the past. But few have went deep into his detailed plan and itscharacteristics in the process of recovering the area. Hence this paper conducted amore comprehensive exposition so as to deepen the further research over thishistorical event and moreover to provide a referential case for today's diplomaticnegotiations between China and other foreign countries. The dispute about Yili in the late Qing Dynasty is a paramount event in Sino-Russia negotiations of modern times, and it also plays an important role in China's modem history of diplomacy. The analyses of the successful recovery of Sinkiang by force and of Zuo Zongtang's force-supporting-diplomacy strategy are still of great value to the correct handling of today's China diplomatic relations.This paper will elaborate on the idea from four sections.In the first section Zuo Zongtang's thought will be the focus. Putting equal importance on the coast defense and the frontier defense is the basis of his thought about national defense. Through with The debate over the coast and the frontier defenses. Zuo Zongtang urge Qing government allow use of the military against Sinkiang, which led to the recovery of Sinkiang. This paved the way for the future action.The second section is about Zuo Zongtang's detailed plan for recovering Yili. It was the core of Zuo Zongtang's thought about drawing up a plan for Yili that force supported diplomacy and diplomatic relation should be properly handled.The third section focuses on Zuo Zongtang's critique of Chong Hou's signing the treaty. Chong Hou signed Yili because of the "Livadiya Treaty," which zuozongtang established the successful planning and implementation of the strategy.The last section is about Zuo Zongtang's contribution to Zeng Jize's success. I think, Zeng Jize recover Yili through negotiations based on the success of Sinkiang's most basic recovered. A specific his plan to recover Yili to support Zeng Jize's strategy planning is the most important factor in the success of negotiations.The ending part is the conclusion: we conclude the experience of Sinkiang reoccupation made by Zuo Zongtang, and the characters of his strategy.
