This thesis tries to discuss and summarize the Affection Thought(the affection is called qing in Chinese)of A Dream of Red Mansions."the major idea about affection"indicates that the main theme of this novel is the affection. Dream and illusion purpose indicates that the author's aim is to express the tragedy of disillusion of qing by illusion means. So the subject is the attempt and failure of Mending the Heaven. In the end all is empty, this is the general programme of this novel, whose mood shows a tragedy of life and love. The affection becomes empty, while the author made the process"from nihility to lust, from lust to affection, from affection to lust and from lust to nihility"appeal to his novel. The novel demonstrated that his conflicting feelings were clinging and no alternative.The thesis is divided into five parts.Part One, the Introduction summarizes the present research about the Affection Thought of A Dream of Red Mansions and narrates the aim of the thesis. That is, this thesis tries to discuss and summarize the affection of A Dream of Red Mansions, establishes and analyses the topic of love deeply, striving to correct the unilateralism of the traditional opinion.Part Two"Detailing the Affection"discusses the core status of love in the novel carefully. The thesis discloses the deep meanings of affection through the change of the concept of love and sums all kinds of phenomena about feelings. Jia Baoyu's love is mainly shown by his famous"mental lasciviousness".The author set up the symbolizing structure with love as the core of the novel.Part Three"Mending the Heaven by Love"is the creation aim and the subject of A Dream of Red Mansions. The thought of Mending the Heaven by Love came from"love essence"in the mid-term of Ming Dynasty. In the view of the experience of a stone which was unlucky because of not being chosen to mend the heaven (here, the stone symbolizes Jia Baoyu), the author described the action of"Mending the Heaven by Love"through Jia Baoyu's experience in the Prospect Garden. The author generalized the process of"Nihility-Lust, Lust-Affection, Affection-Lust and Lust-Nihility"on the whole. The process of realizing the nihility is an indispensability step to prove love. The meanings of the nihility, lust and love are affected by Buddhism and different from it. The failure of the ideal of love completes the process of"Lust–Nihility", making A Dream of Red Mansions a tragedy of the deepest dye. Human beings can't throw away the void of"a blemish in an otherwise perfect thing and the course of true love never runs smooth"as main body of sensibility and lust.Part Five, Brief Summary summarize the Affection Thought of this work .The affection occupies to the core status in the humanity, while Mending the heaven by love can't be realized in fact. Life is a tragedy of love, that is, human beings'fate is a dream and all is empty, which is the end of A Dream of Red Mansions.A Dream of Red Mansions is a romantic love story on the surface, but in fact it is a social novel by describing love, which is a traditional topic. But this thesis proves it from a special point of view—affection consisting of two clear ideas: Detailing the Affection and Mending the Heaven by Love which recovers the author's creative motivation.
