Vocal music art is the close combination of music and literature. It consists of two subjects: songs and operas, and the former is the combination of music and poetry; the later music and drama. The perfect combination of poetry and music can have a strong impact on the deep hearts of audience. As early as in Qing Dynasty, LiYu, the famous writer and opera theoretician, stated, "A person who seeks to sing a song well must ask a great master for the meaning of the song before singing. If the master is confused, the singer may as well turn to a literator for help, and only sing it after obtaining its meaning." LiYu's words not only indicate the importance of song comprehension in singing, but reveal the close relation between songs and literature, and show the important role that the explanation of literary contents in songs plays in the early preparation of singing. As far as a singer is concerned, only striving for deep understanding about contents and emotions contained in songs, can he express the inner meaning of the ideas and feelings in songs through his singing. In practical singing, some singers can sing with rhythmic voices and rich expressions, like something intangible firmly attracting audience to make their emotions change following the singing. But others' singing is so boring that audience can't understand and lose interest in appreciating it. Why? Besides the vocal technique, the main reason for the difference is that the singer has no deep understanding about the content of works, can't grasp the exact idea in works, can't express singing language well, and as a result can't produce a resonant emotion between singer and audience. This paper just develops from this point, and aims to make a useful research to build a more perfect image of vocal music art through probing into new ways of second-creation about vocal music---full explanation of literary contents in songs, by means of documentary material, illustration, and comparison. The explanation of literary contents in works not only covers the explanation of contents and emotions in lyrics but also the analysis of vocal rhythm, cadence and tune, and also the literary understanding of song melody. This is the creative point in the paper. The paper consists of three chapters. Chapter one mainly deals with the close relation between song, opera and literature by citing examples about perfect combination of lyrics and melody. Chapter two logically demonstrates two important functions of explaining literary contents in songs: the necessity of presenting both voice and expression and the necessity of standard locality. Chapter three, by linking theory with practice discusses how to fully explain literary contents in songs in practical singing and teaching. At last the paper briefly generalizes the importance of literary explanation in vocal music performance art, and the necessity for singers to improve their literary culture in order to express the works' idea well and meet esthetic requirements of vocal musical performance art.
