Po Xie Lun is a Buddhist work intending to break error and protect Buddhism by Master Fa Lin in initial stage of Tang dynasty. This paper is trying to recover original appearance of Po Xie Lun as much as possible through ascertaining its original manuscript and later edition, then punctuating and proof reading. Based on the author's experience and the background of that era, this paper researches the work's profound ideology and summarizes its huge structure in order to raise the literature value.It consists of two parts. The first part gives a general introduction to Po Xie Lun. It consists of five chapters.Chapter 1 introduces biography of Master Fa Lin, his influences on the society and his descended works in order to comment on the era through experiences of a person.Chapter 2 discusses the reasons why the author wrote Po Xie Lun. By contrastin the attitude and policy to Confucian, Buddhism and Taoism of Tang emperor at the initial stage, and considering Buddhism's relationship with benevolent government politics and its conflict with Confucian and Taoism, the two ideological system, inevitability of Po Xie Lun were explored.Chapter 3 analyses the ideology and structure. Its ideology contains faithful filial piety ethics, the argument between alien and native Chinese and Buddhism; the affect on cause and effect. Its structure is built for giving a prominence to its ideology. The preface is managed as guide, text as skeleton, to elicit discussion from specific thing, in which the clues and focus in the history of the debate between Taoism and Buddhism are penetrated. That would contribute much to research the relationship and spiritual conflicts among Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.Chapter 4 expounds the literary value of Po Xie Lun. Po Xie Lun is written by rhythmical prose style. It converged by many types or forms of literature, various literature means, and manifests out the work's important value.Chapter 5 explains the detailed proof reading.The second part is essential annotation part, as emendation, punctuation, paragraph division, annotating on the complete book. This paper takes Po Xie Lun collected in Zhong Hua Da Zhang Jing published by Zhonghua Press in 1986 as the original manuscript, Song Qi Sha Zang Jing (photostat copy) and Po Xie Lun collected in Da Zheng Xin Xiu Da Zang Jing, and Han Fa Ben Nei Zhuan collected in Dun Huang Bao Zang as references, to recover original condition of Po Xie Lun as possible. Punctuations are added to help people read. Paragraph division is made to show entire structure. The annotation is given as a whole to express the meanings accurately.
