The novel Bai lu yuan (White Deer Plain) which has granted the Fourth Mao Dun Literature Award, was one of the major literature works in the 1990s, representing the highest artistic level of novel of that time. The auther, Chenzhongshi, earned a fine reputation by the constantly emerging academic treatises and a large number of commentaries, and was considered a master in writing tregedies of the chinese nation in modern china.Mr. Heqizhi has once commented: "for the novel Bai lu yuan…the characters are the threads of it from start to finish, demonstrating the evolution of the chinese nation through the vicissitudes of those characters." Thus, those classic images could best reveal the destiny of the chinese nation, while demonstrating the history of the survival of the chinese nation, as well as the life experience from those characters. The tragic lot of those characters appropriately reflect the original intention of the auther: a reflection for the destiny of the chinese nation.Baijiaxuan is the apologist of the feudal patriarchal society. While being stubborn and pedantic, he bears the national spirit running through several thousand years' history of china. However, in the transitional period, the social class he represents would inevitably die out, as a result of which his life was destined to be a tragedy. Mr. Zhu, the spiritual leader of the people in Bailuyuan, is an ideal representative and a Propaganist of the the Confucianist doctrine. However, in real life, when all his efforts melt into sarcasm and ridicule, he has to shift his ideal from serving the society to maintaining his own integrity. And when his last straw of maintaining his own integrity fell through, he could only live as a image, though as beautiful as the legendary white deer, which shows the tragica declining of the Confucian culture. LuSan is a typical obedient servant, who won't know that he was being explotited, and won't know how to acquire a position equal to his masters. Hei Wa, full of a rebellious spirit since childhood, longed for an end to exploitation and enslavedness. So when the father and son acted contradictorily to their own personality, their intelligence as any human being are born with disappeared practically. Thus their tragedy is definitely a tragedy relating to their personality. As for the women, their tragedy is mainly due to fedual attitudes. Though bearing opposite viewpoint, Tianxiaoe and Lulengshi shared the common fate of perish under the system of feudal society, baring its cruelty and ruthlessness. Mr. Lu Xun has once put forward a "slave principle" But what the novel prestnts is that no one could establish a certain principle for the women. As a result, women are destined to play the most tragic role.Bai Lu Yuan unfolded a history from the angle of the people, through its description of the characters. The reason for focusing on individual' s life experience is for a historical reflection for the history of the chinese nation. History is created and performed by individuals. Thus only those individuals could truthfully and authentically annotate the history of the chinese nation. This treatise strives to conjure up the evolution of the chinese nation by studying the tragic fate and vicissitudes of the main characters in an aim to unfold the secret history and ponder over the destiny of the chinese nation.
