I elaborate the significance of periodical research in combination with contemporary culture research theory in the introduction of this thesis, and moreover, I elucidate the key value of translation studies of British and American literature by Short Story Magazine(1921-1931). Objectively speaking, there is too limited translation of British and American literature in Short Story Magazine. Compared with the contemporary literature of Russian and other less-developed nations, the proportion of British and American literature is always not very high, which is not parallel with the higher literature achievement of British and American literature. However, British and American literature is still an important part indispensable to translation of foreign literature in Short Story Magazine (1921-1931). On purpose of getting overall information of it, the translation of British and American literature shall be paid much more attention to in addition to the history shaded and covered under the previous main stream narration. This thesis intends to have an objective evaluation for the status of the translation of British and American literature by Short Story Magazine in China's modern literature history by means of translation literature history presented by this periodical and its ideology effect. In partâ… , I trace and analyze the problem in the research status quo of Short Story Magazine in recent years and then induct and analyze the research of Short Story Magazine and its translation literature, and at last deepen the insignificance and impact of translation research of British and American literature during 1921 -1931.In partâ…¡, I collect the ideas of foreign literature translation published in Short Story Magazine during the 11 years after the renovation of Short Story Magazine and sum up its characteristic. By means of describing the overall overview of foreign literature translation in Short Story Magazine in this period, I clarify the important status of foreign literature translation in Short Story Magazine in China's literature circle in 1920s' after its innovation, and conduct research of British and American literature translation in Short Story Magazine on this basis. In partâ…¢I have specific research of translation of British and American literature by Short Story Magazine. I classify and collect all the translation aspects of British and American literature published in Short Story Magazine (1921-1931). Moreover, I have applied comprehensively the polysystem theory of Itmar Even-Zohar, the theorist of culture in Israel and the rewriting theory of Andre Lefevere, the American translation theorist and comparative literature in my thesis and point out that although translation of British and American is always on the marginality of the whole foreign literature translation activities, the amount of introduction is far more than the amount of translation, works by British and American writers with various appearances, the climax of British and American poem translation emerging in 1923-1926, which are absolutely a kind of phenomenon of British and American literature exerting pressure on the center as the secondary culture. As a great of literature, the achievement made by British and American literature has been generally acknowledged, but under China's special national conditions, British and American literature cannot be overall translated legally. Thus China is in face of such a situation: some of works written by British and American writers and some literature phenomenon are translated into China, but relatively many British and American literature have no chance to be introduced into China, or they are introduced into China's pluralistic system just as revised ones or nationalized ones of China. In partâ…£, I investigate the internal and external factors of translation of British and American literature in Short Story Magazine (1921-1931). The influences exerted by internal literature system on translation of British and American literature in Short Story Magazine are mainly embodied in chief editors whose attitude toward translation of British and American literature directly influences and determines the condition of British and American literature translation. In addition, the main writers of some unique columns are both translator and chief editor. Their double identity has great significance for the research on them, so it is also within the investigation field of the first section. In the second section, I investigate the Commercial Press, Ltd.'s impact on translation of British and American literature in Short Story Magazine by means of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of the field of cultural production. Because the translation of British and American literature is dissociated with the main stream discourse of the times with no threatening for ideology, it can evade the censor of the sponsors. Therefore, the authority of the Commercial Press, Ltd. has very limited impact on the translation of British and American literature in Short Story Magazine (1921-1931).In conclusion, I trace back the features and causes of translation of British and American literature in Short Story Magazine (1921-1931) and advance several aspects needing further research.
