Scherzo is one music type formed in the late Revival of Learning period, which refers to a vocal ditty or instrumental ditty with satire and humorous features at first and later Haydn established its using status with introduction of Sonata Cycles. Scherzo is widely popular and development in the early and middle romanticism period with more content-oriented features being formed, and the personality characteristics of many composers being integrated. In the mid-19th century, Scherzo is developed to peak by Chopin and other composers. After the mid-19th century, the concept of Scherzo as an independent genre has become more broad and vague, with the broader scope being covered. Scherzo character is often hidden in nature in some other genres, being presented by Scherzo Spirit.This paper takes scherzo ranging from 17th century to 19th century as research objects. With the composite way of technical and cultural analysis, from the aspects of format and content, the form character and relationship with other genres of different historic phase was compared and induced. And the inner evolvement and external extension character was also reviewed and analyzed under the influence of different historic phase social concept. At last, the planar transform character from format-oriented to content-oriented was summarized.
