The Study Of The Eastern Han Dynasty Sound Training Justifications

This thesis attempts to take the materials of ShengXun in《Bai Hu Tong Yi》and《Shi Ming》as language samples, to classify,conclude and evaluate the motivation of Shengxun in the Eastern Han Dynasty. ShengXun,motivation and etymology have the relationships as follows: to learn the motivation of language is the fundamental cause and the final purpose of the appearance of ShengXun.ShengXun is the tool to realise this purpose.The exploration of etymology is the process to realise this purpose.This thesis tries to reveal the motivation of Shengxun in the Eastern Han Dynasty through inspecting the language factor together with the cultural factor.This thesis mainly discourses from the following five sections:The first chapter concludes and summarises the inner motivation of the monomorphic words and the compound words of ShengXun in《Bai Hu Tong Yi》and《Shi Ming》with the pronunciation, form,meaning and the internal form of words and phrases, which includes such three aspects as the pronunciation and meaning style, form and meaning style and morpheme structural style of motivations.The second chapter discusses and analyses the cultural motivation of ShengXun in《Bai Hu Tong Yi》and《Shi Ming》, from such three aspects as special characters of objective things, the ritual and customary culture and the psychological culture. The research foundation of the motivition of ShengXun is the relations between the name of things and the objective reality , namely relations between language and the outside world. The cultural motivation refers to the cause of relations between language mark and objective things in the word, i.e. relations between the name of things and the objective reality.The third chapter analyses the reason and the performance of the differences of motivations between《Bai Hu Tong Yi》and《Shi Ming》.The objective of《Bai Hu Tong Yi》is to take"the three guides and six disciplines"as the social ethics, to advance the Confucian educational code in the Eastern Han Dynasty,Meanwhile, LiuXi proposed that"all the things in the outside world have the rules to get their names", namely things naming has its reason,which is Liu Xi's main purpose to write《Shi Ming》. Because the objectives of the two books are different, their motivation orientation"seemingly agreed but actually at variance",the exploration of language source of《Shi Ming》is consistent, while《Bai Hu Tong Yi》seems to explore of language source ,in fact it was aimed to propagate educational code.From the angles of ethics and sociology,the fourth chapter,taking its thought category as the foundation, analyzes"educational propagation"orientation of ShengXun in《Bai Hu Tong Yi》. The goal of ShengXun in《Bai Hu Tong Yi》is to"decide the status". And many ShengXun related to rituals and human relations not only interpret the meanings of words, but also indicate the viewpoints and theories of the authors, so as to standardise social ethics and form the standard of conducts that instruct the entire society.The fifth chapter studies ShengXun in《Shi Ming》from etymology angle,inspects the relations between the word which provides interpretation with ShengXun and the word which was interpreted, through discussing the relations between pronunciation and meaning as well as form and meaning of them.The goal of ShengXun in《Shi Ming》is to"decide the name".《Shi Ming》is the first explanatory work in our country exploring thing's name with ShengXun. The etymology research is its central content.Although this thesis points out some shortcomings of motivations in《Bai Hu Tong Yi》and《Shi Ming》, the defects cannot obscure the virtues.The explorations of motivations are still important references for us to study Chinese words's motivations . It also provides the right method and thinking mode for us to study the motivations of the language and its words.
