Abstract/Summary:
This article focuses on the painting ideology of Chen Hongshou. With the fact that Chen had very few systematic painting theories, the article tries to identify elaboration of his painting ideology that is untouched in previous researches, through sorting and classifying Chen's postscripts and colophons, poems and articles. Closely related to Chen's status as an adherent of a former dynasty, it explores the three main ideas "antique", "simple", and "real" in his painting ideology and analyzes its forming factors and influence on later ages, based on Chen's paintings, masters, and friends. An unprecedented subject as it is, this article strives to present and appraise Chen Hongshou's painting ideology objectively, comprehensively and holistically.
