In the beginning of 20th century, western art was called 'Modernism' or 'Modern' art. Before the emergence of modern art, traditional western painting advocated science, technology and traditional perspective painting principle. Development of industrialization and further improvement of photography bring a new question to painting: Is the purpose of painting just to intimate the nature? At the end of 19th century, painting skills had developed to a quite mature stage, and began to reach the extremity. At this time, part of the artists was tired of rational skills, returned to the original point, seeking for the natural sensation and frank naivety. Therefore, a batch of works fulfilled of 'naivety' had come up, part of which were in the manner of children doodling, to express their feeling and sensation more directly. This trend of painting became a new form of modern painting. The first part of this dissertation demonstrates the phenomenon of 'naivety' in the modern painting, lists some representative 'naivety' paintings; the second part analyses the similarity of above-mentioned works - the character of 'naivety' and compares with children painting and traditional panting; the third part raised out the reason of the emergence of 'naivety' and profound meaning of the 'naivety' that artists want to express. Finally, it summarizes the significance of 'naivety' phenomenon in the modern painting.
