The emergence and existence of numerous painting associations was a kind of special phenomenon in modern Shanghai. Yuyuan Painting Charity was founded in 1909. With the longest history and activity time in Shanghai painting associations, it had great social influence. How was it fund? What was the trait of its organization and management? How did it develop? What was the relationship between it and other painting associations and what was its position in Shanghai society? What kind of new era characters of modern painters in Shanghai reflected by all of these questions mentioned above?Based on the study, the thesis wants to argue that Yuyuan Painting Charity was the earliest painting association with entire organization and rules in modern Shanghai and had creative significance. It related social charity affairs and its members' economic inter-connection well. The various management styles and achievements formed the base of its charity affairs and the important source of its funds. Compared to other painting associations, it was the first one which took social charity affairs as one's regular activity. With the prosperous development of charity affairs in Shanghai, it was the representative of the painters in Shanghai who joined social charity affairs actively. Paying attention to charity affairs has become a "New Trend of Union" with fashions and regional specialties.
