The Yuyuan Garden Painting and Calligraphy Charity Association was founded in 1909, which is the first modern painting and calligraphy society of Shanghai owning a whole set of regulations and organization. It is a mutual beneficial organization that established by the Shanghai artists during the fierce competition in the modern art market of Shanghai aiming at striving for survival, expanding the market impact, painting sale, safeguarding their own account, relieving the people in disaster and setting up relationships. In this thesis by studying the reason of The Yuyuan Garden Painting and Calligraphy Charity Association establishment, regulations, and the activities after establishment (1909-1937 suspend activity) to pry about the same period development of Shanghai art market. Then take The Yuyuan Garden Painting and Calligraphy Charity Association as an example to discuss the impacts and affects which the art market of Shanghai in the end of the Qing Dynasty and the period of the Republic of China upon the same style of painting and calligraphy society of Shanghai.
