Norman Bryson, the famous contemporary European and American art theorist, and art historians. Who is one of the most performance and famous scholars in the rise of the "new art history" in the 1980s, he published works called the "new art history Trilogy", known as the "Western ' New art historians' study of the most prestigious academic achievements." With his considerable ideas and challenging attempt to silence, He has injected new vitality for the study of the history of art, and stired up quite mean the academic reflection. There is little research on Bryson, and more only for the introduction. This paper's choice focus on the tradition of a thematic study, pointed out the theoretical ideas, theories of Chinese and Western sources, as well as the difference or the two representative with the traditional concept——"schema-correction","retro for innovation" and take the example of Lin Fengmian's creation for the interpretation of three cases of the traditional concept, highlighted in spectacular features of Bryson art history——"the anxiety of influence", and pointed out it's significance for contemporary Chinese art theory. The article is composed of the following four parts:First, Chinese and Western traditional concept. We noted that similar of the two the traditional concept by the introduction of Gombrich's "schema - correction" theory and Chinese "retro for innovation". Gombrich's "Schema - correction" theory think that the development of art in the minds of the process is based on the inherent schema constantly with their visual field matching, the process of correction, here the tradition is a positive process of transmission;" retro for innovation "is a law of the development of arts in China, and always back to core and starting point in the new historical. However, the traditional attitude is the same, namely, that tradition on the impact was positive.Second, "The anxiety of influence" of the traditional concept art history. By reading out through Bryson's viewpoints which challenge to the positive role of traditional theory. We point out the uniqueness of the theory. 1. Bryson questioned Gombrich on his traditional progress concept. Bryson view that the traditional art historical research (including Gombrich) of the artist analysis that artist A quoted the style of artist B and C, but does not specify why quoted. Bryson analysis the complex of this phenomenon by "the anxiety of influence".2. Bryson's "the anxiety of influence" of the traditional concept in art history. This concept benefited from Bloom's concept of poetic theory: "the anxiety of influence",That is "misreading" theory, which starts from the painter's real psychology effected by the tradition.3. "Trope". Bryson borrowed the "Trope" of this important concept from semiotics based on the six "Amendment Ratio" of Bloom.The concept including : "shield-trope", "general-trope" "displaced-trope" and "reverse-trope" . He pointed out that younger artists transformated the works of the older through the "trope", and by this way release their own imaginative space.Third, "The anxiety of influence" and Lin Fengmian. By taking the example of Lin Fengmian , we interpret his roads of art on the base of "retro for innovation","schema-correction" and Bryson's traditional concept in art history, thus emphasize the novel of Bryson's theory.1. "Schema-correction" and Lin Fengmian. Lin Fengmian form his own Chinese painting of the new schema on the base of traditional Chinese paintings schema and the west color, He reconcile Chinese and Western and take the third path, thus enriching the old terminology database.2. The interpretations of "retro for innovation". The paper analysis Lin Fengmian ideas of backing to ancient, Start from the Dunhuang murals and folk art, combined with his lady painting, still life painting, flower-analysis.3. "The anxiety of influence" and Lin Fengmian. In the collision and blend of Chinese and Western cultural traditions, facing the highly perfect Chinese paintings, Lin Fengmian has difficult to find the original space. Think by Bryson's theory, we can see that Lin Fengmian's " blending China and the West " come from the anxiety about the Western and Chinese tradition, he want to jump out of the East and the West and take his unique artistic path.Fourth, The significance and shortcoming of Bryson's traditional concept in art history. Bryson's traditional concept in art history has triggered new thinking in contemporary Chinese art theory, it gives us a new perspective to see the traditional Chinese art theory. Of course, Bryson's traditional concept in art history has its limitations, it ignored the positive side of arts succession, neglect the objectivity of the works and interpretation to a certain extent. At the same time, art history has been constrainted the history and social, it is relatively weak to use his traditional concept in art theory to prove this point.
