In regards to traditional painting, the scholar Chinese ink painting constructs a kind of unique esthetic and artistic norms, which make Chinese painting distinctive in the world artistic history. But along with the change of social and cultural structures, this kind of esthetic and artistic norms has seemed to turn weak gradually, showing strong limitations and exclusions. Behind any concept hides a motive force which produces this concept. And this kind of motive force comes from a certain combination of "culture-psychology" accumulation and actual emotion. Times are in evolution at any time, and so are concepts accordingly. The rapid developing ink figure painting is a discipline which is most expressive to show the time spirits and contents, and most typical among all kinds of contemporary Chinese paintings. It embraces a new appearance and connotation in a new era which is quite different from the gentleness of traditional ink painting.This thesis gives an analysis of evolution and development in form and spirit of ink figure painting in current context. And combining with the writer's self creation practice, the thesis illustrates the writer's cognition towards self-expression in modern ink figure painting from the angle of inheritance and development. The thesis elaborates such ideas like the following: painting is the embodiment and outer extension of current culture; the change of times leads to revolutions of esthetic and artistic norms in ink painting. And it also reveals the development and outer expression of "pen and ink keeps pace with time" in modern context and the relationship between traditional painting, Western painting and self-expression. At the end it suggests emotion is the life force of painting and only there be expression of true self and sincere creation can we achieve the unification of form and spirit of the creation. This opinion echoes with the title: form is outside visible part while there is a hidden connotation. "self-expression" is the main clue of the total thesis.This thesis is divided into four parts. It begins with the change of contexts, analyzes the time character of current ink figures in two respects of formal language and spiritual connotation, and finally discusses some creation practices to clean up and improve the cognition towards Ink Figure Painting in current context. Chapter 1 illustrates the evolution of ink figure painting in current context and is fallen into two parts. The first part deals with the change of context. In this part, the writer gives a comprehensive explanation of modern context through illustrating the tolerance nature of Chinese culture and the impact on Chinese culture of the inrush of the western culture thought. Change of times leads to the change of context and the change of context affects the creation of ink figure painting. In this condition, the term "self-expression" appears and is introduced by the writer. The second part deals with the changing status of ink figure painting in current context. In this part, the writer elaborates ink figure painting's evolution and embodiment from the point of mental concepts and formal language of painting, and makes a comparison with traditional ink painting and ensures the connotation of self-expression in contemporary ink figure painting again. Chapter 2 talks about the relationship between contemporary ink figure painting and traditional painting, and the influence and acceleration on contemporary ink figure painting of western painting. And the developing base of contemporary ink figure painting is included in this part. Chapter 3 is a contemporary embodiment of contemporary ink figure painting. It takes some figures including Tian Liming, Liu Qinghe, Liu Jin'an, Zhang Wang, as examples to explain "self-expression" in current context for another time. The last chapter is the creation experience of the writer. It functions to correspond and explain the former parts. The writer tells his/her thought route and opinions during creation process, has formed his/her unique understanding towards self-expression and decided to pursue the deep unification of form and spirit.All in all, surrounding "self-expression" in current context, this thesis analyzes time characters of contemporary ink figure painting, takes "form is the outside visible part while there is a hidden connotation" as a standard, and reveals the characteristics and direction of contemporary ink figure painting.
