Due to the elliptical phenomena existing commonly in modern Japanese, this dissertation, based upon the achievements made by earlier researchers, makes a systematic and thorough study of the elliptical phenomena in modern Japanese, from three aspects, namely, the analysis of elliptical phenomena, the pragmatic function of ellipsis and the cultural background resulting in the ellipsis. With regard to the elliptical phenomena in Japanese, this dissertation mainly analyzes the ellipsis of headwords, the ellipsis of subjects and the substitution of the auxiliary verb"だ". In the respect of the pragmatic function of ellipsis, the conditions and motivations of the elliptical phenomena in Japanese are discussed in depth on the basis of the achievements of western scholars'theoretical studies. As for the cultural background that results in ellipsis, cultural causations existing commonly in Japanese are explored systematically from four aspects, namely, tacit understanding, aesthetic conception, the-silence-is-gold and group consciousness.
