Pragmatic ambivalence (hereafter PA) relates not only linguistic phenomena, but also communicative strategies.By examining vivid examples in daily communications, the thesis aims at expounding the speaker's communicative strategies by using PA and focuses more attention on how the hearer applies non-demonstrative inferences to grasp the speaker's communicative intentions from the perspective of relevance theory. There are three chapters in the thesis: chapter one interpreting the concept of PA; chapter two introducing the relevance theory; and chapter three explaining PA by using relevance theory from the aspects of both the speaker and the hearer, especially from the aspect of the hearer. At last, the thesis draws the following conclusions: PA can be regarded as a special form of linguistic expressions and a special type of ostensive strategies under the guidance of relevance theory; generally speaking, the relevance theory plays an important role in making the hearer identify the speaker's communicative intentions correctly. Although the hearer needs to make more cognitive efforts to recognize PA, mostly he is able to gain much better cognitive effects. Therefore, if the speaker uses PA reasonably and the hearer builds the contextual relevance in his mind properly, it is beneficial for both of them to achieve an ideal communicative effect.
