In old China the well-known city God played an important role in the public's mind. According to historical documents, it has been worshipped by the public since the late Han dynasty, and not until the foundation of Ming dynasty by Zhu-Yuanzhang a thousand year later was it offered sacrifice in the national ceremony as an important god. Its status and function experienced a qualitative change with it being carried onto the national sacrificial altar from the folk, as exerted a significant influence on social thought and public feelings. It can be observed from this process that the official recognition of city God is achieved though the interaction of great tradition and little tradition, the struggle between the government and the folk, and the realignment of belief, power and order.
