Lying is a complex and dynamical cognitive process. The mechanism of lying and the relation between lying and anti-lying are always the hot points in the neuroscience, psychology research fields. This paper designed an experiment by separating the lying course into three parts: preparing for the lying, executing the lying and evaluating the lying to study the mechanism of it. The experiment stimuli are visual, using pictures to guide the subjects to do some preparations, execute, and then present the feedback of evaluation to the subjects. The event-related potentials and the behavioral data were recorded and processed. The main contents are as follows:1. Preparation stage: calculated the amplitude and latency of N2 to do the statistical analysis, mapped the brain topography and then identified the source of N2. The results showed that: a significant difference of the amplitude of N2 between lying-response preparation and the truth-response preparation, the former was much larger than the latter. But the latency of N2 did not reach significance. The topographic map of scalp electrical activity showed N2 potential was largest at the medial-frontal scalp location. The results of the source localization showed the sources were in the medial frontal cortex, in or near the anterior cingulated cortex.2. Execution stage: statistical test was done between the lying response and the truth response using the reaction time (RT) and the correct response rate. The results showed that: RT reached the significance and the correct response rate did not, but the correct response rate of truth response was slightly higher than the other.3. Feedback stage: calculated the amplitude of feedback negativity elicited by four types of feedback(-3,0,+1,+2) and tested by one-way ANOVA, mapped the brain topography and then identified the source of FN. The results showed that: the amplitude of FN among the four feedbacks reached significance. The topographic map of scalp electrical activity showed N2 potential was largest at the medial-frontal scalp location. The results of the source localization showed the sources were in the medial frontal cortex, in or near the anterior cingulated cortex.
