Joseph Rudyard Kipling was the first British writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1907.The study of Kipling and his works were mainly about his imperialism and identity crisis.Though Kipling's idea of the East-West reconciliation in his Indian fiction was mentioned,the conflict of the East-West reconciliation has not be raised.The thesis does a complete research on the conflict of Kipling's idea of the East-West reconciliation.The research includes three parts:the opposition and conflict on the theme of Kipling's Indian fiction,the multi-character and conflict on the figures,the polysemy and conflict on narrative structure.The thesis consists of four chapters.Chapter One divides the theme of Kipling's Indian fiction into two parts:the opposition of east and west culture,the reconciliation of east and west culture . The conflict on Kipling's idea of the East-West reconciliation is revealed by means of analyzing the opposition and conflict on the theme of his Indian fiction.Chapter Two divides the figures in Kipling's Indian fiction into three kinds:Occidental,Oriental,Hybrid.Occidental is divides into the ideal colonists and the depraved colonist.Oriental is divides into the typed ones and the exalted ones.Hybrid is divides into the Indian who accepted the western education and the British who were influenced by Indian civilization.Kipling's ambivalence is reflected by means of analyzing the multi-character and conflict on the figures.Chapter Three analyzes the nesting narrative structure in Kipling's Indian fiction and the double pipeline structure in Kim.The conflict on Kipling's idea of the East-West reconciliation is revealed by taking advantage of the polysemy and conflict on narrative structure.Kipling is a writer with great achievement.The thesis gives a complete research on the conflict of Kipling's idea of the East-West reconciliation,in order to provides a new dimension to the understanding about Kipling and his works.
