The reform of the new curriculum which is under way means English Curriculum Standards has brought about great changes in middle and primary schools. It not only reforms the original curriculum system and concepts but also has a strong impact on the traditional teaching activities, thus resulting in the overall change of the teaching environment. The new concepts advocated in English Curriculum Standards challenge teachers' educational beliefs and practice. To deal with these challenges, they must take an active part in the reform, renew their teaching values and styles so that they will have a better understanding of their roles.Teachers are traditionally compared to candles, silkworms, gardeners and so on, which implies that teachers are transistors of knowledge, conductors in class, guide, helper and managers, etc. However, such a view of teachers overlooks the subjective activity as individuals and can't satisfy the need of our society. After analyzing the social needs and the concepts of English Curriculum Standards, the author contents that teachers should change themselves in the following perspectives: Firstly, teachers should renew their teaching beliefs. Classroom teaching should center on students instead of teachers. Secondly, teachers should improve their personal qualifications, including professional teaching ability and theoretical level. Thirdly, teachers should pay attention to improving teaching methods. They should strengthen task-based teaching and level teaching. To different students and different textbooks, teachers should apply different teaching methods. At last, teachers should be good at exploring and rewriting school-based course books, which should cater for the students in their own schools. With a detailed case study, the author holds that teachers should pay attention the following three aspects when considering their roles: firstly, teachers should be thinkers and researchers, developing their ability to do research; secondly, they should act as scaffoldings and platform for exchanging information. Outstanding teachers should have the ability to organize students to exchange information, discuss, cooperate and seek more knowledge; thirdly, they should believe in lifelong-learning. Society is developing, and knowledge is changing all the time. The limited knowledge teachers have can't meet the need of society, so they should learn more to broaden their horizons and eventually become qualified teachers.
