In the 1930s, Chinese cartoon developed into a prime period. This thesis tries to elaborate on it from the perspective of "nation" based on specific background of that time."I propose the following definition of the nation: it is an imaginedpolitical community--and imagined as both inherently limited andsovereign. " defied by Benedict Anderson in his book Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism. As mass media play an important role in building "imagined communities" , this thesis illustrates how news cartoon represent "imagined communities" and analyze the reason why imagined communities was represented in that way.According to the definition of nation by Anderson, the image of nation represented by cartoon will be explained from three aspects: geological, political and cultural. When it comes to the reason of representing, cartoonists considered to be an important factor will be analyzed thoroughly.
