Imagined Literature Communities

This thesis expounds the Taipei literature modernism practice of production field in 1960s, and the thinking and related issues caused in the aspect of modernity, in the comprehensive analytical way of cultural sociology and cultural study. In order to discuss the process of cultural acceptance, transmission and reproduction and the relationship among the internal structures of actual case in cultural field in the history, and the major impact on culture produced by cultural external environments such as education, symbolic capital, habitus and class etc, hereafter the thesis is based on the "field" theory of Bourdiue. In addition, the concept of "Cultural Hegemony" proposed by Gramsci, and "Systematic Theory of Culture" of Raymond Williams will be applied in the tension relationship between cultural production field and other social fields as well as political field, economic field and educational field practically.The research of this thesis aimed at the "cultural field in Taipei". Taiwan in 1960s was in the period of development of pre-capitalism, especially in Taipei with strong personality of metropolis. The development and operation of cultural industry in city shall not be overlooked in the study of acceptance and transmission of literature modernism. The concept of "artistic autonomy" closely tied to the cultural industry, is a by-product of cultural production location "value production" and "meaning reproduction". In the practice of cultural modernism in Taipei in the 1960s, the breakthrough and development of cultural language and form, unusual and boldness of topic and content have become a major mark, which differentiate from the traditional literature. However, the concept of "artistic autonomy" closely tied to modernism was rarely mentioned in the studies on Taiwan modern literature. The "Duality of Art" of Adorno released us from the complex modern situation. As for thematter of aesthetics of modern literature, and the development of modern social system and market mechanism of literature, under the principle of ubiquitous "heteronomy", the literature field has the possibility of "autonomy".This thesis chooses the magazine Modern Literature established in Taipei in 1960 as the study subject, discusses the impact and conflict on national culture produced by acceptance and variation of literature modernism in Asian area, and the response and pondering of traditional intellectual in the face of impact of modernity. Furthermore, new form right space formulated by modernity, namely that super dimension "public sphere" gathered by printed media stepped onto autonomy, getting rid of bondage of traditional right space, providing soil for reproduction of publicity of public opinion in citizen society, which is an outstanding characteristic of "Difference" and contribution brought by "Literature Modernism" in Asian.Modern Literature as famous serious literature journal in Taiwan in 1960s, "Literature Modernism" was the sharpest statement. Many journals related to modernism in 1960s were a flash in the pan in the history, yet Modern Literature stands firmly for 2o years independently, taking a literature discourse power of an era.As for the achievements on the field of modern Chinese literature creation and cultivation of author wrought by Modern Literature, the academia has popular confirmation and abundant studies on major authors and articles. But for the study of literature internal and external structure and relationship net, the static analysis of text document tends to be limited by linear view of time, which simplified the active selectivity and spatiality of flow in the acceptance and transmission of literature thoughts. In spite of numerous researchers, the meaning of time and literature value caused by Modern Literature, there are not clear and appropriate orientation and assessment in the area of theory.Modern Literature rooted and grown in Taipei, due to its special regionality (Taiwan), metropolis (Taipei) and age (Cold War between United State and Soviet Union), as well as "experiment of literary form" and "language of practice"conducted by the new tradition of Chinese literature after May fourth Vernacular literature, from the perspective of regionality, we should observe the complicated relationship between the modernism thinking and Chinese national literature. Besides, owing to the attribute of journal and nature of printing media, the modern literature makes theproduction and transmission of literature documentary, keeps the tract of dynamic development and puts down all the participants (editor, author, translator, sponsor, publisher and journalist). When cultural sociology concepts such as field theory and Hegemonic culture were analyzed in this thesis, the effectiveness of theory can be verified and reflected, and subsequently the meaningful question can be proposed.
