China has long been known as a state of poetry. Our ancestors have composed plenty of poems with distinctive national feature. Liejin, as a figure of speech was one of these new patterns.Liejin was named by famous rhetorician, Prof. Tan Yongxiang in the middle or late 20^th century. He said in < New rhetoric form> "There is a kind of special sentence in classical poetry. These sentences are made of nouns and noun phrases. There are no adjectives, but may describe scenery; There are no verbs, but may narrate. We call this pattern Liejin. " This kind of sentence pattern is different from that of traditional Chinese pattern. It breaks through traditional structure of subject, predicate and object, and forms a new sentence pattern, so it is vivid. Liejin arose the attention of many scholars such as Zhang Liangqiang from Beijing Normal University when it came into being. Other scholars also published articles to state their own opinions.In the author's opinion, Liejhin, as a figure of speech, from it's development, we can see, has been existed in ancient time, but it wasn't named theoretically. Many excellent poetry have been composed according to t his pattern. For example, Ma Zhiuyuan . He used this special pattern Liejin and gained extraordinary aesthetic effect.In the author's opinion, we should play more emphasis on Liejin's pattern. The real structure of Liejin should be A+B+C, A₁+B₁+C₁(ABC and A₁B₁C₁, are nouns or noun phrases). So, when we judge whether a pattern is Liejin or not, we should follow the following steps:Firstly, we should analyse from poetry pattern characteristic. Also, poetry with different structures, the conditions of whether they are Liejin or not are different.Secondly, we should analyse the relations of words used. In poetry, those are not Liejin when there are more than two nouns and noun phrases, for relations between nouns and nouns can be modifiers, thus they are not Liejin. So when judging a figure of speech we should analyse their relations carefully.The main purpose of rhetoric is making language more colorful and powerful, so the functions of rhetoric are very important. The content of rhetoric is abundant, for there are positive figure of speech and negative figure of speech. No matter what kind of figure of speech they are, both may make language more vivid. Liejin also has this function. Liejin may have great effect due to its well-knit structure and rich, reserved content.In a word, Liejin, as a figure of speech, provides a new approach for the composing of classical poetry thanks to its new way of expression and special sentence pattern.
